Why it works

No group classes. No “conversation class”.

A lawyer doesn’t need to learn English. They need to stop translating in their head during a negotiation, to find the right term in a clause, to advise a foreign client without losing authority. It is precision work, and it is done one to one.

Step 1 · Preparation — coaching, e-learning, coursebook

Coaching with an English-speaking coach, a former lawyer

One-to-one video sessions on your files, your contracts, your situations. Targeted correction, role-plays, the same coach throughout the programme.

E-learning “Yes, You Ken English”

Short video and audio capsules by Ken Fagan: the most frequent mistakes of French-speaking lawyers, corrected one by one.

Practical English Language Skills for Lawyers

The coursebook, included

Practical English Language Skills for Lawyers (Routledge), written by two CAJA coaches. Every participant receives a copy on enrolment.

Step 2 · The certification

The CAJA certification

90 minutes of remote assessments: client interview, negotiation, drafting and correcting clauses. A jury of lawyers and legal English specialists. An official certificate.

The assessments in detail

What you will be able to do, in English, at the end

  • Conduct a client interview and frame an instruction
  • Give clear, defensible legal advice
  • Negotiate a clause without losing control
  • Draft, adapt and correct legal documents
  • Present your role and your firm with confidence
  • Prove your level: an RS6810 certificate, not a promise

Funding: the CPF covers all or part of the programme

CAJA is registered in the Répertoire Spécifique of France Compétences (RS6810). Lawyers, in-house counsel, self-employed professionals and employees in France can use their Compte Personnel de Formation. Law firms and legal departments can also fund a team programme through their OPCO or their skills development plan. Details in the FAQ.

They did it

“This is not just an English course: the people opposite you are former lawyers. A month on, there is a before and an after.”

Zakaria DakdakiTax lawyer, Forvis Mazars Avocats

“A good TOEIC score is no guarantee of effectiveness on the job; if I were hiring a junior lawyer, I would choose a CAJA-certified candidate without hesitation.”

Karina BlanchardLegal & Compliance Director, HomeServe France

“Today I negotiate, advise and draft in English with a precision comparable to what I demand of myself in French.”

Raphaël MesaTax lawyer, Monaco
